State third in horse population

A new survey of the state's equine industry shows Tennessee has 190,000 horses as of Jan. 1, making it third in the nation in inventory behind Texas and California. Meanwhile, Tennessee ranks seventh in the nation with $48.6 million in value of horses sold during 1998. In other survey highlights, Middle Tennessee led the state in average value per animal of $2,813, compared with $2,711 statewide. Income from equine sales and related agricultural activities totaled $189.3 million.
